Scottish agricultural charity RSABI is urging people to check on the welfare of neighbours – especially those in their communities who are elderly or vulnerable – as the extreme wintry conditions in the north of Scotland continue.
The charity is also encouraging people in the agricultural community to help raise awareness that it can provide Help for Heating payments for those struggling to heat their homes and also offer a range of other financial and practical support.
With the snow affecting many areas across the north of Scotland, RSABI has been highlighting the exceptional initiative of local farmers who, as well as looking livestock and defrosting troughs, have been helping free snow-bound rural people and re-open roads blocked by drifting snow.
Local Orkney farmer Graham Tulloch is one of the farmers who has been working hard to clear the roads in Orkney alongside many other farmers and crofters across the country who are helping members of the public in difficulty.
Whilst many farmers have been out helping those who need it most, the weather conditions can also put a serious strain on the farming community, making it difficult to care for their livestock, with water pipes to be defrosted and difficult conditions for feeding cattle and sheep.
Carol McLaren Chief Executive at RSABI said: “It is very heartening to see the ways that farmers and crofters are going above and beyond and supporting their communities during this period of extreme weather in addition to looking after their livestock in and running their farms and crofts.
“With freezing temperatures and very difficult conditions expected to continue, the sentiment behind RSABI’s #KeepTalking campaign is more vital than ever, and we’re encouraging everyone to look out for one another. Everyone is keen to avoid tragedy in these sort of extreme circumstances and taking time to check in on someone could lift someone’s spirits and perhaps do much more.

RSABI’s Help for Heating payments are available to those in the agricultural community who may be worried about their heating bills in the cold weather. The charity is providing a minimum of £400 to help people heat their homes. To apply for the payment please call 0808 1234 555. Alternatively, an online assessment tool is available via RSABI’s website www.rsabi.org.uk to check if you qualify. RSABI’s case officers will support applicants through the process.
