Ploughathon Raises Vital Funds for Rural Charity

1st September 2016

Venue: Castle Douglas

A charity ploughathon, which took place in Castle Douglas last week, has already raised £4,085 for RSABI. With your help we can try to smash the £5,000 barrier - just head to the official fundraising page.

Collin Dodds and his friend, William Anderson, succeeded in ploughing at Chapelton Farm, Castle Douglas, for 24 hours non-stop. They started at 5pm on Thursday 1st September and continued ploughing through the night and the following day until 5pm on Friday 2nd September. They faced a wet Thursday night, but still managed to plough just over 100 acres over the 24 hr period.

Mr. Dodds has worked for the Biggar family at Chapelton Farm for over 18 years, and chose to raise money for Scotland’s rural charity RSABI, whilst funds raised by Mr. Anderson will be going towards Marie Curie.

Money raised by Collin will go towards RSABI’s current campaign, Help us help them, that aims to raise £150,000 to help put a stop to rural poverty. RSABI supports people who have worked in agriculture, crofting and other land-based industries who are now experiencing hardship.

Collin Dodds had the following to say about the ploughathon’s success:

“I really enjoyed the ploughathon; being in my tractor for 24 hours wasn’t all that bad! I’m so grateful for all the support we both received, and to all those who came to cheer us on during the 24 hours to keep us going.”

 He continued:

“I’d like to see a huge thank you to the shop in Springholm, who brought us breakfast at 5am on Friday morning, to all the family and staff at Chapleton Farm who have been a huge support in helping me get ready and of course helping to facilitate the event, and to all the local businesses who gave up their time to speak to find out what we were up to and to learn a little about the RSABI and for their kind donations.”

Jill Sloan, South West Development Officer for RSABI, added:

“Collin has raised a fantastic amount for RSABI already, and there’s still another two weeks to go on the fundraising page. We’re absolutely thrilled with how successful the ploughathon has been, and the funds raised by Collin will go a long way towards helping put a stop to rural poverty.”
